Anne of Green Gables - Lucy Maud Montgomery (1908)

LADY. RACHEL LYNDE lived just where the main Avonlea road descended into a small hollow, bordered by alders and tympanums, and crossed by a stream which began in the woods of Cuthbert's old house; it was reputed to be an intricate and precipitous stream in its former course through those woods, with dark secrets of pools and waterfalls; but when she came to Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a stream could pass Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due respect to decency and decorum; She was probably aware that Mrs. Rachel was sitting by her window, keeping a watchful eye on everything that went by, from the streams to the children, and that if she noticed anything strange or out of place she would never rest until she had discovered why.
